Bowsprit

Bowsprit

Harr, man the capstan.  After much ado we finally have a bowsprit.  A bit of a backstory is probably in order; the previous owner of the boat had crashed into a log boom in the dark of night many years ago.  This had led to some damage in the bowsprit that was never properly attended to.  This damage festered into much much worse damage over the years and required some major repair to the spar.  After weighing many options we opted for repair over building a new spar.  Three long scarfs were required to retain the compressive strength needed.  The bowsprit is a key piece of the rig which on this boat will see up to 7,000lbs in service, and up to 28,000lbs in trauma like the crash mentioned above.  We also designed a compression ring that will spread the load out over more wood fiber to avoid the same type of damage in the future.
